Native species grow on the very thin soil which covers the chalk on the North Downs. We took special advice and soil scraped sections of a bank to create the perfect habitat for the native wild flowers to grow and not be smothered by intrusive weeds and thistles. A small amount of soil is left on the white chalk – just enough for the flowers and grasses to root.
Countryside Stewardship grants may be available for landowners to carry out this kind of project.
