Along a farm track and bridleway near Lambourn, Noll Countryside Services has completed an impressive 1,300 metres of new hedge planting scheme using a carefully selected mix of local native species.

In total, 6,225 hawthorn, 875 blackthorn, 450 field maple, 450 dogwood, 450 dog rose and 450 hazel have been planted to create a dense and wildlife rich boundary. Every sapling has been individually staked and fitted with a protective guard to prevent deer and other animals from browsing the tender young growth while the hedge establishes itself.
Hedgerows are among the most valuable features of the British countryside. They provide vital habitat for birds, small mammals and pollinating insects, create natural corridors linking landscapes, reduce soil erosion and help capture carbon. Along farm tracks and bridleways, they also enhance the experience for walkers and riders, softening boundaries and adding seasonal colour, blossom and autumn berries.

It is always encouraging to see hedges being restored and replanted. Over time this new stretch will thicken, flower and fruit, becoming a living, breathing part of the landscape and a lasting investment in biodiversity and the character of the Lambourn countryside.
